Why heat pumps

Why Heat Pumps Fit Sacramento-Area Homes.

A heat pump isn't right for every house. For many homes in our region, the climate, the rebates and the roof line up.

Mild winters, hot summers

Sacramento winters rarely stay far below freezing, which is where heat pumps work best. In summer they cool like any air conditioner.

Strong fit

One system, not two

A heat pump replaces both your AC and your furnace with one outdoor unit and one indoor coil. Less equipment to maintain and eventually replace.

Simpler

Pairs with rooftop solar

It runs on electricity, so solar can offset the power it uses. Senga installs solar and batteries too, so we can look at the whole home.

Works with solar

Rebates may apply

SMUD and Roseville Electric offer HVAC rebates. Amounts and rules change, so we check yours before you decide.

Depends on your utility
The honest comparison

Heat Pump vs. AC and Gas Furnace.

Both can be the right answer. Here is how we think about it when we're at your kitchen table.

A heat pump tends to win when

  • You're replacing an AC and a furnace at the same time
  • Your system is 12 to 15+ years old
  • You have rooftop solar, or plan to add it
  • You're a SMUD or Roseville Electric customer with rebates available
  • Your home doesn't have gas service, or you want to move off it

AC and a gas furnace may still make sense when

  • Your furnace is young and working well
  • Your electrical panel would need a costly upgrade
  • Gas is cheap for you and you don't have solar
  • You only need to replace one failed component
Not sure? We'll run it both ways

Tell us about your home and we'll show you the numbers for each option. If a heat pump isn't the better move for you, we'll say so.

What it costs

What Heat Pump Installation Typically Costs Here.

Typical ranges for the Sacramento region, before any utility rebates. Your home may land above or below them.

Project Typical range What drives the price
Heat pump replacing a failed AC (ducts in good shape) $7,000 to $12,000 Home size, SEER2 rating, single-stage vs. variable-speed
Heat pump replacing an AC and a gas furnace $8,000 to $15,000 Tonnage, duct condition, attic or crawlspace access
Ductless mini-split, one room or addition $3,500 to $7,000 Number of zones and the length of the line set
Ductwork repair or sealing, if needed $1,000 to $5,000 Leaks, undersized runs, and how much needs replacing
Electrical panel or circuit upgrade, if needed $1,500 to $4,000 Existing panel capacity and distance to the unit

Typical regional ranges, not a Senga quote. A mechanical permit and Title 24 verification are normally part of a replacement in California, so confirm whether a quote includes them. Compare itemized bids that specify the same SEER2 rating.

Rebates and incentives

What Utility Rebates Exist Right Now.

Which rebate applies depends on who sends you your electric bill. Programs change, so treat this as a map, then confirm before you sign.

SMUD

Sacramento, Folsom, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova & more

In 2026, SMUD has offered up to $3,000 for a qualifying gas-to-electric heat pump conversion and $1,000 for electric-to-electric upgrades. Requirements include a two-stage or variable-stage system meeting a 15.2 SEER2 minimum and installation by a SMUD Contractor Network member.

Roseville Electric

Roseville

Roseville Electric runs its own HVAC rebate program, separate from SMUD and PG&E. Call Roseville Electric at (916) 797-6937 to confirm current amounts and rules for your address.

Confirm with the utility
PG&E

El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Rocklin, Granite Bay, Auburn & more

PG&E-area homes have fewer direct HVAC rebates, and programs change often. We'll check what's available for your address before you decide.

What's goneCheck before you count on it

The federal 25C heat pump tax credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. Some state programs have been waitlisted or fully reserved. If anyone promises an incentive, ask to see it in writing. Ask any contractor you're considering whether they're in the SMUD Contractor Network before you sign.

Types of heat pumps

Ducted, Ductless or a Hybrid.

Ducted heat pumps use the ductwork you already have. Ductless mini-splits serve additions, garages, offices and older homes without ducts. A hybrid setup keeps a gas furnace as backup while a heat pump handles most days. We'll match the type to your home, not the other way around.

What a Heat Pump Looks Like at Home

A heat pump is a quiet outdoor unit on a small pad, and it pairs well with rooftop solar.

What a proper install includes

Sized to the House, Not to a Rule of Thumb.

A heat pump that's too big or too small never feels right. Here's what a good installation should include, and what we look at.

  1. A load calculation. Size set by your home's real heating and cooling needs, not by square footage alone.
  2. A ductwork check. Leaky or undersized ducts waste a share of what the system makes.
  3. An electrical check. Panel capacity, breaker size and the run to the outdoor unit.
  4. Permit and Title 24 verification. Required for replacements in California.
  5. Startup testing and a walkthrough. Tested before we leave, and explained so you know how to use it.

Questions

Straight Answers on Heat Pumps.

Don't see your question? Ask us on the phone.

Call (916) 545-9053
Do heat pumps work in Sacramento's climate?

Yes. Sacramento's winters are mild, with nights that rarely stay far below freezing, which is where heat pumps are most efficient. Foothill towns like Placerville and Auburn run colder, but modern heat pumps handle those temperatures. In summer a heat pump cools exactly like an air conditioner.

How much does heat pump installation cost in Sacramento?

Most Sacramento-area heat pump installations run roughly $7,000 to $15,000 before incentives, depending on the size of the home, the condition of the ductwork and whether the electrical panel needs work. Ductless mini-splits for one room or an addition cost less. Get an itemized quote that lists the SEER2 rating, the permit and any duct or electrical work.

Are there rebates for heat pumps in Sacramento?

It depends on your utility. In 2026, SMUD has offered up to $3,000 for a qualifying gas-to-electric heat pump conversion and $1,000 for electric-to-electric upgrades, with requirements including a SMUD Contractor Network installer. Roseville Electric has its own program. PG&E-area homes have fewer direct HVAC rebates. Confirm current amounts with your utility before you buy.

Is the federal heat pump tax credit still available?

No. The federal 25C tax credit applied to heat pumps installed through December 31, 2025 and ended after that. Some state programs have been waitlisted or fully reserved, so confirm availability in writing before counting on any incentive.

Is a heat pump cheaper to run than a gas furnace and AC?

It depends on your rates and your home. Heat pumps move heat instead of creating it, so modern units are very efficient, but electricity usually costs more per unit of heat than natural gas. A heat pump pays off best with rooftop solar, utility rebates, or an aging air conditioner you were going to replace anyway. We'll run both options for your home.

What is the difference between a heat pump and an air conditioner?

An air conditioner only cools. A heat pump cools in summer and reverses to heat in winter, using the same outdoor unit and indoor coil. If you replace both an AC and a gas furnace with a heat pump, you have one system to maintain instead of two.

Will I need to upgrade my electrical panel for a heat pump?

Sometimes. Many homes have enough capacity, and some need a panel or circuit upgrade, which adds cost. We check your electrical during the home visit so the number you see up front is the real one. SMUD has offered a separate bonus for panel work tied to a gas-to-electric conversion.

How long do heat pumps last?

Most heat pumps last 12 to 15 years, similar to a central air conditioner. Annual maintenance helps them reach the long end of that range.

Can I pair a heat pump with rooftop solar?

Yes, and it's one of the best combinations. A heat pump runs on electricity, so solar can offset the power it uses for heating and cooling. Senga installs solar and batteries as well, so we can look at the whole home together.

What is the Senga Comfort Plan?

A $0-down way to get a brand-new, high-efficiency system with installation, maintenance and covered repairs included, for one predictable monthly payment. It's powered by Palmetto and available to eligible homeowners. Checking your options is a soft credit inquiry, so it won't affect your credit score.
