Is it time?
Stop fighting your HVAC system. Start feeling comfortable at home.
An aging system rarely fails all at once. It gets louder, rooms drift out of balance, repair bills creep up, and then it quits on the hottest week of July. Here is what changes when you replace it on your schedule instead of its.
Living with an aging system
- An AC or furnace 12 to 15 years old, or older
- Rooms that never feel right, summer or winter
- R-22 refrigerant that keeps getting pricier to recharge
- Repair visits every season, and two machines to maintain
Living with a new heat pump
- One efficient system that cools and heats
- Steadier temperatures, room to room
- Quieter, low-speed operation on variable-stage systems
- New equipment, not a system you are waiting on to fail
Replacement usually wins. Under it, repair usually does. It is a starting point, not the whole answer. If a repair makes more sense for your house, we will tell you that on the call. Already have a replacement quote from someone else? We will give you a straight second opinion.
The SMUD rebate, simply

The rebate is the easy part. The install is what you live with.
A heat pump that is sized wrong or connected to leaky ducts will never feel right, rebate or not. Here is the difference to look for in any quote, including ours.
The rebate-chaser quote
- System sized by square footage, or by whatever was there before
- Ducts assumed to be fine
- Electrical panel capacity checked on install day, if at all
- Permit and Title 24 verification left vague
- Rebate promised verbally, not shown in writing
The Senga approach
- A load calculation sized to your actual house
- Ductwork checked for leaks and undersized runs
- Panel and breaker capacity confirmed before we quote
- Permit and Title 24 verification included
- The SMUD rebate shown as its own line on your written quote
One company, one point of accountability. Every project runs under Senga's contractor license, with a Senga coordinator in charge from quote to final inspection.

Questions homeowners ask before they call.
How much is the SMUD heat pump rebate in 2026?
SMUD offers $3,000 for a qualifying variable-stage heat pump that replaces gas heating, $2,000 for a qualifying two-stage heat pump that replaces gas heating, and $1,000 for a two-stage or variable-stage heat pump that replaces an existing electric system. Single-stage systems do not qualify. Rebates are subject to available funding, so confirm the current amount before you sign a contract.
How much does a new heat pump system cost?
It depends on the size of your home, the condition of your ductwork, your electrical panel and the system you choose, so any honest price comes after a look at the house. You get a written quote that shows the SMUD rebate as its own line, plus $0-down and financing options side by side.
Does my system actually need to be replaced?
Not always. A useful rule of thumb: multiply the repair quote by the age of the system. Over $5,000, replacement usually makes more sense. Under it, repair usually does. We will walk through the real numbers for your house, and if a repair is the better call, we will tell you.
Can I get the SMUD rebate for a system I already installed?
Generally, no. The rebate is tied to a new installation completed by a SMUD Contractor Network contractor, who submits it as part of the project. That is why the time to call is before you replace anything, ideally before the old system fails.
Do I have to apply for the SMUD rebate myself?
No. Under SMUD's program, the participating contractor gives you the rebate application to sign and submits it for you. When Senga installs your system, we handle the submission and show the rebate amount on your written quote.
Can I use the SMUD rebate with the $0-down Comfort Plan?
It depends on the plan terms, and it can differ from paying cash or financing. We will show you exactly how the rebate applies to each payment option on your quote before you choose, so there are no surprises.
Does SMUD give a rebate for a new air conditioner only?
SMUD's HVAC rebates are for heat pumps, not standard air conditioners. A heat pump cools exactly like an AC in summer and also heats in winter, which is why it can replace both your AC and your furnace.
Do heat pumps work in Sacramento winters?
Yes. Sacramento winters rarely stay far below freezing, which is well within the range where modern heat pumps heat efficiently. In summer, a correctly sized heat pump cools like any central air conditioner, including on 105-degree days.
Is there also a SMUD rebate for heat pump water heaters?
Yes. SMUD offers separate rebates for qualifying heat pump water heaters that replace gas, scaled by tank size. If you are replacing your HVAC anyway, ask us about doing both in one project.
Is the federal heat pump tax credit still available?
No. The federal 25C energy efficient home improvement credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025, which makes the SMUD rebate one of the main incentives left for Sacramento-area homeowners in 2026. Senga does not provide tax advice.
